Anticipation & The Sasquatch Fever

Working at a ski resort is loaded with anticipation and adrenalin rushes. Whether you are waiting for the snow to arrive or waiting for the customers to come with it, all of it feeds the need for that adrenalin shot that ski resort workers live for.

As the Snowshoe team waits for the flakes to fall or for the conditions to be just right to make our own, we do get to reunite with old work friends and meet new staff members. With a peak workforce of about 1200 there are a lot new faces to get to know but with a return rate of around 50% of our seasonal workers, it is time to play catch up and rehash old Snowshoe stories. And, all returning workers have a story (or several) to tell to anyone who will listen.

Snowshoe stories are like legend and lore. They are filled with recounts of deep snow, no snow, big jumps, crazy crashes and of course the one that got away. One of my favorite Snowshoe stories revolves around Sasquatch and the quest to find him at Snowshoe. It has been a side story and a viral way to keep us occupied in the off season. But, the elusive big foot could always show up in the winter. Does he turn white in the winter just like the Snowshoe Hare??

I think I might have seen him on my way up the mountain this morning. In fact, I am sure of it. He is in a transitional state shedding his summer brown fur for a fluffy white coat. Soon he will be fully white which will make him far harder to spot when you are out on your morning ski run, on freshly groomed slopes, sipping coffee and eating waffles at the Boathouse…. Can you feel it? Do you have the Sasquatch Fever?
